California’s aggressive efforts to combat climate change and grow a vibrant economy that will sustain both present and future generations will be highlighted at the 2015 Green California Summit, coming to the Sacramento Convention Center from April 7-8.
Through a program of education sessions, Pre-Summit training on April 6 and an Expo featuring scores of green products and services, the Summit will highlight the wide range of policies, programs, strategies and technologies that are being actively implemented to preserve the natural resources of the Golden State.
Now in its ninth year, the summit is developed with leadership from an advisory board composed of leaders from state and local government and the private sector. The board is co-chaired by CalEPA Secretary, Matt Rodriquez, Government Operations Secretary, Marybel Batjer, and Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency Secretary, Anna Caballero.
Principal Summit sponsors include the Sacramento Municipal Utilities District and the Sacramento and East Bay Clean Cities coalitions.
Keynote Session
The Summit will open at 8:30 am on April 7, and feature two dynamic keynote speakers. Bob Foster, a former Mayor of Long Beach and past President of Southern California Edison who has also served on the Board of Governors for the California Independent Systems Operators (ISO), has long been a leader in the state’s energy sector.
California Senate President Pro Tempore Kevin de León has been at the forefront of vital environmental efforts. He co-chaired Proposition 39, the California Clean Energy Jobs Act and recently led the California delegation to a UN climate conference intended to develop a framework for a new international agreement on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Pre-Summit Training
Pre-Summit seminars on April 6 will address vital sustainability topics. A daylong workshop, “Prop 39 Update” will offer an in-depth briefing on the changes to guidelines for project approval, best practices in school efficiency projects, and resources for expanding the scope of efficiency projects. This session will feature presentations by stakeholders in all aspects of Prop 39 implementation, including the California Energy Commission, the Division of the State Architect, and the California Conservation Corps. The extended format will provide a rare opportunity for attendees to get answers to their questions directly "from the source."
Also on April 6, the Clean Cities Sacramento and East Bay Coalitions will host a daylong Clean Transportation Efficiencies Forum. This special event for public and private sector fleet professionals will cover strategies for reducing petroleum use, efficiencies gained from alternative fuels and incentives for clean vehicles and infrastructure. The day will include a heavy duty clean vehicle ride and drive.
April 6 will also bring a full-day workshop ZNE Workshop for State and Local Governments, facilitated by New Buildings Institute with co-sponsorship by Green Technology, in partnership with the California Public Utilities Commission. The workshop is designed to help facility professionals prepare you to meet California’s goals for zero net energy buildings. It will highlight case studies about innovative projects achieving zero net energy performance, and provide tools to help advance ZNE policies, programs or projects.
Pre-Summit offerings will also include a half-day Cap and Trade Symposium organized by the Institute for Local Government. Hundreds of millions of dollars of carbon auction proceeds are being invested to increase renewable energy, reduce petroleum use, make buildings more energy efficient, reduce carbon pollution, and manage natural and agricultural lands to store carbon. The symposium will bring together leading thinkers to discuss how state agencies can partner with local governments to achieve these goals in communities throughout California.
Concurrent Education Sessions
On April 7 and 8, more than 20 concurrent education sessions will address a range of topics relating to green policy and practice, from codes and standards to water conservation, green schools, funding sources for energy projects plans and sustainable purchasing.
Several education partners are working with the Summit to organize sessions that meet the needs of those planning and executing green programs.
The Clean Cities Sacramento and East Bay coalitions are hosting a day of sessions focused on carbon reduction in the transportation sector, including updates on EVs and EV infrastructure. The Institute for Local Government will present a local government track addressing topics including water, energy and climate and green economic development. The Office of Education and the Environment of CalRecycle will offer training California’s K-12 environmental literacy curriculum. A track from USGBC California will cover onsite water re-use, ZNE buildings and more.
Expo
The conference includes an Expo on April 7-8, featuring more than 100 companies offering green products and services, from lighting solutions and flooring to water conservation technologies. The Summit program includes expanded Expo-only hours, drawings and lunch on the floor for paid attendees.
The Expo will include a Green Auto Mall, with the opportunity to discover new vehicles for both personal and commercial use, as well as charging stations and other transportation services. There will also be ride and drive opportunities for attendees.
Special Events
Registration for the Expo and keynote session is free, and no-cost registration also enables attendees to participate in special events during the Summit, including an Opening Reception from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on April 6 in the Expo and the annual Leadership Awards reception from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm on April 7.
A keynote breakfast on April 8, featuring State Architect Chet Widom, will also be open to all.
Established in cooperation with the Advisory Board for the Green California Summit, the awards highlight and celebrate successful state and local government projects implemented in California during the previous year. All nominated projects must be publicly financed and executed, and must have provided a measurable benefit to the natural or human environment. Nominations for awards will be accepted until February 27, 2015.
